Making a House a Home: The Journey of Hastings Specialist Disability Accommodation

Taking a new Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) property from concept to move-in day is always complex and requires dedication and commitment. The recently opened Hastings SDA takes it to another level.

Taking a new Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) property from concept to move-in day is always complex and requires dedication and commitment. The recently opened Specialist Disability Accommodation in Hastings VIC takes it to another level, thanks to the size and complexity of the project. Our Claro team worked tirelessly with SDA provider Speck to bring supported accommodation to the Mornington Peninsula community, guided by a shared vision to create homes where individuals with disabilities could thrive and find belonging.

Together, we embarked on a mission to design and build spaces that cater to the unique needs of each resident. From selecting the perfect location to designing accessible layouts, every decision was made with careful consideration and attention to detail. As the Supported Independent Living (SIL) provider for this SDA home, Claro provide insight and advocate for the needs and requirements of the participants matched with the property.

Hastings features 3 homes, each with 4 bedrooms. Each bedroom features a private ensuite and courtyard, so residents can enjoy their own private sanctuary, whilst also having access to shared spaces to socialise with their housemates and care staff. The property is built to the High Physical Support and Fully Accessible design standards.

The path to Hastings was not without its challenges. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic presented challenges, disrupting supply chains and causing delays. Throughout this process our team remained steadfast in our commitment to seeing the project through to completion. Claro’s Customer Experience Managers (CEMs) liaised with potential residents to keep them updated on the progress, and reassured participants we were doing everything we could to see them in their new home as soon as possible.

Central to the success of Hastings was our unwavering dedication to fostering a sense of community and belonging. Recognising the importance of social connections, we organised meet-and-greet sessions and compatibility assessments to ensure residents would feel at home from day one. These efforts laid the foundation for a vibrant and supportive community, where support networks could thrive.

As the grand opening of Hastings drew near, our team’s efforts shifted to meticulous planning and coordination; every aspect of the homes needed to be ready to welcome its new residents. From the addition of personal touches to coordinating logistics, no detail was overlooked by Claro’s  Accommodation Service Managers (ASMs) in their pursuit of ensuring all clients felt welcome and at home.

Finally, the long-awaited day arrived—the opening of Hastings SDA. It was a moment of celebration and triumph, marking the culmination of years of hard work and dedication. As residents crossed the threshold into their new homes, they were greeted with warmth and hospitality, surrounded by a community that embraced them with open arms.

One special story is that of Heather and Susan, two sisters who are reunited at Hastings after many years living apart. Both were previously living with family but their care needs had increased over time and moving into SDA will allow them to receive the care they need and achieve their goals. Both women are excited about their new home, the opportunity to reconnect with one another, and to be part of the Hastings community.

For Yvette Jones, VIC State Manager for Claro, the journey of Hastings holds a special significance. “It’s more than just a construction project,” she reflects. “It’s about creating a haven where individuals with disabilities can live fulfilling lives and pursue their dreams.”

Looking ahead, Hastings stands as a testament to what can be achieved when stakeholders like Claro and Speck come together with a common purpose. As the residents settle into their new homes, they embark on a journey filled with possibilities, supported by a network of care and compassion.

Stay tuned in coming weeks as we share stories of the individuals who reside at Hastings about their journey and the opportunities their new home and lifestyle will provide.
